The State-Specific Questions Compared
Your test paper isn't identical to everyone else's. Three of your 33 questions come from a pool that only exists for the state you live in.
Why states get their own questions
Germany is a federal republic. Each of the 16 states (Bundesländer) has its own constitution, state parliament, and areas it governs independently, things like policing, schools, and local administration. The state-specific questions test whether you know the basics of the state you'll actually be living in as a citizen, not just federal-level facts everyone shares.
How the pool works
Nationwide, the full catalogue has 300 general questions plus 160 state-specific ones: 10 for each of the 16 states. Your actual exam draws 30 general questions and 3 from your own state's pool of 10. That's where the "33 questions" figure comes from.
Which state's questions apply to you
It's based on where you're registered to live, not where you were born or grew up. If you moved from Bavaria to Berlin last year, you'll get Berlin's questions. Moving states after you've already started preparing is one of the more common reasons people accidentally study the wrong set.
